Tosya Gharibyan, a resident of Arinj village, Kotayk marz, asked her husband, Levon Arakelyan, many years ago to dig in the cellar of his two-story house to store potatoes. This request made in 1985 changed the whole life of builder Levon Arakelyan. Master Levon began digging and dug alone for 23 years until the end of his life. Now hardly a day goes by that someone does not visit Master Levon’s underground cave-museum.
According to Tosya, a vision appeared to Levon. a voice told him from the white mist. «Levon, you will do a miracle around the world. You will get sick, do not be afraid of diseases. Whatever images come before your eyes, you will do the same.» It was after this that master Levon decided to dig the potato hole so deep.
The depth of the Dredging Museum is 21 meters. The cave-museum has 7 rooms connected by corridors and stairs. The surface of the cave is 280 square meters. it spreads under the house, the yard. According to Tosya Gharibyan, the temperature of the cave does not change. and 10 degrees in summer and winter.
There are many carvings in the cave, which were also made by master Levon. He also ran electrical wiring, installed lamps. Some episodes of Vigen Chaldranyan’s movie «The Nun» were filmed in this cave. Tosya Gharibyan gave a positive answer to Hetki’s question whether the house remained earthquake-proof after the cave was dug. According to him, no tremors are felt in the house during earthquakes.
Master Levon’s principle was to dig only by hand, with a chisel and a hammer. He rejected offers to provide electrical tools and equipment. He encountered different layers of soil: black soil, tuff, basalt, all of which he overcame by digging almost every day for 23 years and being malnourished.
«My husband slept for 3-4 hours. Recently, people have been coming, bringing food, entertaining him, eating, saying, «These people are putting me out of business.» But from that beginning, he filled the jar with acid water, drank it all day and worked with it. He did this with great love, he worked with his soul. If he didn’t work with spirit, he wouldn’t be able to. And I constantly told him that «get out, it might fall on your head, so be it, so be it.» He didn’t hear it himself, he was doing it in a dream,» says Tosya Gharibyan.
The first floor of the house is still a museum today, where master Levon’s clothes, press publications about him, notebooks in which visitors wrote their impressions are kept. The cave-museum was visited by many Armenians and Diaspora Armenians, as well as foreigners from many countries of the world.
In the yard of the two-story house, flower pots are displayed, which master Levon made from pieces of stones he carved, as well as two paintings he made on the wall of the yard. in one he is holding a cutter and a hammer, in the other the woman is holding a potato.
Levon Arakelyan died suddenly 4 years ago at the age of 67. He was still working in the cave the day he died. «As long as he was alive, he would continue. He used to say, «God has instructed me to do this job, and God will tell us in the end what will happen,» Tosya Gharibyan tells.
She and her husband have 4 daughters and 12 grandchildren, but according to Tosya, in this age of technology, no one will continue the work of master Levon and dig a cave with a chisel and a hammer.
